Genetics Major
Genetics Studies is a major program that focuses on the scientific study of the organization, recombination, function, regulation, and transmission of heritable information in biological organisms at all levels of complexity. A major program in Genetics Studies will likely include in Mendelian genetics, mechanisms of gene regulation, chromosome structure and replication, epigenetic phenomena, DNA repair and recombination, sex determination, genetic interactions between genomes, and molecular evolution.
What can you do with a major/degree in Genetics Studies?
With a degree in Genetics Studies, your career will likely include planning and/or conducting genetic research on gene expression and other topics. You will keep laboratory notebooks that record your research methodology, procedures, and results. As well, you will review and interpret lab results using mathematical and statistical methods. You will need to keep up with scientific literature to learn about new methods, tools, and results in the field, and use that information to inform your own research. In addition, publishing your research by writing academic journal articles and presenting at professional conference may be an important part of your career progression in this field.
Trade Associations and Professional Organizations in Genetics Studies:
Professional associations are groups of specialists dedicated to topics in particular fields. Professional associations provide a wealth of online resources, some of which are geared specifically towards students. These organizations typically also host conferences and events, providing great opportunities for learning and networking across your field of interest.
