This major is a program that prepares individuals to provide evaluations, referrals, and short-term counseling services to help people prevent or remediate personal problems, conflicts, and emotional crises.

Includes instruction in human development, psychopathology, individual and group counseling, personality theory, career assessment, patient screening and referral, observation and testing techniques, interviewing skills, professional standards and ethics, and applicable laws and regulations.

What can you do with a major/degree in Mental Health Counseling/Counselor Major?

If it is your career ambition to become a Mental Health Counselor, you will likely need a master’s degree but may be able to start your career with a bachelor’s degree at an assistant or specialist level.  In your role, you will treat people who need help in reaching and attaining mental and physical wellness.  Some of your work may be in a group setting but may also take place with one-on-one counseling.
